P.S.A WINDOW USERS: Recent Windows Update Fried My PC

I have no other explanation then windows update for it. Windows had a new update this morning that required a restart. I choose restart and shutdown. I come back on tonight and turns on really weird, takes forever to load, window features not working, I do a system restore and it fails! After that everytime I boot up get blue screen of death.

So now my night is spent reinstalling Windows and all my programs and shit.

So heads up window users. Pause your updates for a week or two until they figure that bug out. I reported it to Microsoft.
 
I didn't catch or remember the name of the update. Didn't even knew it installed just asked for a restart. Sorry can't tell you which update to avoid... I do check for updates & install them EVERYDAY, so I know for a fact it is the latest update that requires a restart.
 
The only other thing I could think that could cause this is when I left after hitting update and shutdown is that there was a power surge or somthing that turned the power off durring update but checked the clocks wired to the outlet like stove and microwave and they did not get reset. So can't be that...

Surges can fry computers while clocks just fine. Clocks are nowhere near as complex and sensitive.

That being said, for this reason it isn't a bad idea to have updates as security only. They tend to be the most stable builds, it should prevent any experimental updates from happening, Microsoft sends experimental updates in waves before making them not experimental.

Also never a bad idea, but it takes external storage space, to take a system image(not system restore point) every so often (iirc system images require all the space. They are boxed up backups), since that allows you to do a clean install while keeping your programs and whatnot.
 
Well just got done finishing reinstalling everything. I have fiber internet and PC is a beast, gotta love the SSD versus HDD. Reseting a PC took all day back when. Now just a matter of a hour or little under. Crazy how good techs getting. Guess the PC needed a fresh up anyways. Looking at positives. ;)

Yea. I have nothing important nor do anything important on my PC. Not even online purchases. No photos, no nothing of that nature of importance. PC most vulnerable of all tech we use today imo.

Any game saves I play are on steam cloud and as I said in post above I got fiber internet and a beasty PC that can re-install windows and re-install all my games and programs in short time.

No need for all the extra backup or hardware if things go south like they did with updates or whatnot.

Well I live in Florida and power surges are very common. But my newer fridge and stove are very sensitive to it much like my PC and also reset when one occurs. So I really think it was the new update.

SO hope everyone pauses their updates for a week and then hope they fixed that.

Tell me about it, I've spent more time installing and reinstalling windows 7 more than any other operating system combined, and I used to install random operating systems for fun.

Windows 10 and 11 are much faster installs even on older machines, and modern machines are a lot faster.

It makes reinstalling windows a pretty reasonable more extreme version of turning it off and on again. The slowest part of the process is putting the windows install media on to a flash drive.

What version of windows do you use, anyway? I find 11 to be far more unstable than 10 and I dislike 11 anyway so I use 10

I disagree, i think that is a dangerous misconception desktop computers are as secure as you want them to be. The average person who buys a windows 11 laptop and uses it for work, not installing suspicious apps (which goes for android phones, too), will find more security than using their (android) phones for the same task.

Also, phishing attacks are by far the biggest online risk. People on mobile devices are far more likely to fall for phishing links.

Android is open source, zero days are going to be much much more common.

Phones are the most commonly used stalking tool. They can give an exact location of you, as well as sms, photo, gallery. Those are built in, on a PC they need complete remote access, which requires a malicious program, which will almost certainly be found by Microsoft defender.

For all those reasons, I believe in the modern days, I believe android phones to be the least secure tech. ios is substantially better but still in the end is built to share data.

I never was super fond of XP tbh. But I am young, and windows 7 was my main operating system until 10, maybe 8.1 for a small bit. Though imo windows 10 blew 7 out of the water and is by far my favorite version of windows. Windows 11 really dropped the ball. Had a lot of potential.

You do realise that support for windows 10 is stopping this year and windows 12 is close to pre-release

Ive tried my fair share. There are many things linux just can't do or can't do well, just as it has many strengths. Same goes for Mac, and windows. But the most common ways people use computers, you just can't beat windows. Mac comes close. Linux is amazing for a lot, unbeatable, but home, school, and office use... windows or mac.
 
Linux has come a very long way in regards to being more user-friendly to Windows users. My daily driver is Linux Mint with Windows 7 installed as a virtual machine for a few legacy pieces of software. My work computer is Mac, which beneath its Fisher Price GUI is running a version of Linux. If you drop to command line on Linux and Mac, their command structure is almost identical.

Between Wine, VirtualBox, PlayOnLinux, and Steam for Linux, there's very little in the way of Windows software I can't run on Linux.

As for Windows Updates, I learned a long time ago to always run 30 days behind on updates. That way if Microsoft bricked something, I would hear about it before I installed them and could wait until they fixed the problem before installing. And, yes, only install security patches, nothing else.
