Trump: Israel would be 'leader' of Iran strike if Tehran doesn't give up nuclear weapons program

President Donald Trump said Wednesday that Israel would be the “leader” of a potential military strike against Iran if Tehran doesn’t give up its nuclear weapons program. Trump made the comments ahead of this weekend's scheduled talks involving U.S. and Iranian officials in the Middle East sultanate of Oman. Trump earlier this week said the talks would be “direct” while Iran has described the engagement as “indirect” talks with the U.S.
“If it requires military, we’re going to have military,” Trump said. "Israel will obviously be very much involved in that. They’ll be the leader of that. But nobody leads us, but we do what we want to do."

Head of Iranian Foreign Ministry Tweeted: "Indirect talks between Foreign Minister Dr. Araqchi and US Special Representative for the Middle East Steve Witkoff began with the mediation of Omani Foreign Minister Badr Al-Busaid.

These talks will be held at a location planned by the Omani host, with representatives of the Islamic Republic of Iran and the United States seated in separate rooms, and the parties will convey their views and positions to each other through the Omani Foreign Minister.".

📣🇮🇷
Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmail Baghaei said that the statements reported by Reuters citing Omani officials are baseless.

Reuters had previously reported, citing an Omani official, that the Muscat talks aim to ease regional tensions, exchange prisoners, and reach limited agreements to ease sanctions in exchange for control of Iran's nuclear program.
(Iran now says its baseless/lie.)

Iran's Foreign Ministry Spokesperson says the current round of Iran-US talks in #Oman is not expected to be lengthy. He also denied reports (citing Omani sources) that topics beyond nuclear/sanctions relief are on the Muscat talks agenda.

It turned out that the #Muscat talks were indirect. Iranian and American negotiators are in two adjacent rooms in a shared building. Trump told another lie as part of his showmanship and bragging. Indirect talks were also ongoing in the Biden administration, albeit at a lower level. Brett McGurk, Biden's Middle East envoy, held indirect talks with Ali Bagheri in Oman to de-escalate tensions. Earlier, Amir Abdollahian had repeatedly negotiated indirectly with the Americans within the 4+1 framework, continuing the efforts of the Rouhani administration in its final months. The current talks pursue a larger goal that can be both aspirational and, under certain circumstances, turn into direct dialogue. They also have the complication that the materialization of the lack of the possibility of diplomacy strengthens the position of advocates of military confrontation in the Trump administration.

US, Iran conclude 'positive' first round of nuclear talks, to resume next week

US-Iran talks were focused on sanctions against the Islamic Republic and wars in the Middle East, according to an Omani source.

A Cautionary Note:
Iran's regime tends to portray indirect talks with the U.S. as positive--just like they did during the failed JCPOA revival discussions from 2021-22--to keep the process moving because they try and exploit it as a shield from pressure. Expressions of optimism also helps prop up their currency.

⚠️
Iran’s state broadcaster IRIB warned on Saturday: Trump is expected to make “emotional and unrealistic” remarks in the coming hours aimed at influencing public opinion and the course of Iran-US negotiations.

"The comments hold no other value beyond shaping public perception," the report said citing a regional source. "Trump's remarks may not even be coordinated with the US delegation currently involved in the talks.".

They are trying to get ahead of how bad it really went.

We thank #Oman and Foreign Minister Badr bin Hamad Al Busaidi for hosting and facilitating these talks.

Given the agreement between the two sides to continue indirect talks next week, Oman will continue to play this important role.

There is a belief that the Trump administration wants to move fast with Iran and Witkoff wants to make a political decision to green-light a deal without diving into highly technical details which could slow things down, source tells CNN. Meeting scheduled for next week is likely to take place in Europe, report says.

Iranian media reported that Ali Khamenei met with a number of commanders of the Islamic Republic's armed forces.
↕️
Today Iran's regime's supreme leader met with military commanders for the New Year. He noted that while world powers are equipped with the most powerful and catastrophic weapons, they don't allow others to make such progress in their military capabilities. He tellingly notes that those armies which did not posssess those kinds of weapons were defeated. Silent on Oman talks.
