It’s kinda clickbait, he again emphasized that weapons are a last resort. It sounds like they’re clarifying existing legislation not necessarily a new policy.

The article that it’s based off talks about the law being created in may of this year and they’ve been working on implementing it. They say they’re following the NATO framework for intercepting aircraft and weapons are only a last resort but they are decided by the operation commander. Sounds like this all went into effect July 4th.

The Supreme Council of National Defence (CSAT) has approved new procedures allowing mission commanders to order the downing of drones and military aircraft that violate Romania’s airspace, in line with NATO protocols, defense minister Ionuț Moșteanu said, as quoted by Biziday.ro.

Speaking after the council meeting on Thursday, September 25, Moșteanu stated that the chain of command for drones and hostile military aircraft lies with the mission commander, who must act gradually and in compliance with NATO’s rules of engagement. He stressed that a shoot-down would be considered a last resort.

That's incorrect. This is recent & was announced today by the Minister of Defence of Romania.


The Minister of National Defense, Ionuț Moșteanu, announced on Thursday at the Cotroceni Palace that in CSAT meeting the methodological framework for the application of legislation on the downing of drones and manned military aircraft that violate the national aviation space has been completed. In these cases, the operation commander has the final decision, and in the case of civil aircraft that violate the national space, the decision is that of the minister.
