Wouldnt it be nice, if humanity dedicated itsself to betterment, and exploration?

well what they were using was aa advanced rocket that was being coordinated by Florida and that on its self is a miracle cause i cant remember any Floridian getting out of state without sunlight but they were talking to the people in the rocket cause you know it was a big rocket .

Im thinking yes but…

We have already done it with slider rulers and chewing gum, then took ATV’s to the moon just to pind the perfect golf course. In the 50 years while the hopes and imagination of an entire generation was lost, we still flew quite a few different pressure vessels in LEO so the technical abilities stayed dull but present.

Now what took years of trial and effort could be computed in hours. We are absolute slaves to our computers output.

Yes what they did with so little was so amazing and it was so sad that a generation lost so much ambition. Remember that after the moon they were looking at Mars and then just seemed to walk away.

From what I can tell, they realize that they simply couldn’t do it. There’s one heck of a difference from going to the moon and traveling to Mars a year each way. I think we simply could not overcome the issues, especially radiation on top of that rescues impossible so whatever mission you mounted would have to have been the second man rated vehicle to land on Mars…and then you have to refuel it. We simply could not do it in 1977.

I believe we could have set up a colony on mars (no return) any time after 2006-2010 ish (computer advancements and battery advancements)

But Im a miserly excuse of an aeronautical engineer, and not the prestigious and highly coveted
Aerospace engineer. 😎 (I was an end user, able to diagnose, fight, aviate and navigate. But build one? Forget it! I not qualified to sweep the floor in the engine shop)

that's another thing the radiation from the van allan belt correct? so even though probes have been sent has the radiation even been evaluated?

There was a major retreat from budgets for space exploration. Just look at how much the NASA budget was cut. There was also a political component as the promise of the moon landing by JFK was as much political as anything else. There was an underlying pressure to give the finger to the Soviets by successfully doing this. Then when achieved the incentive to progress further to give the finger to the Soviets effectively became meaningless. The power of American excellence had been made.

That is absolutely true. I believe that without promising something spectacular in a short order, say landing and returning from mars by the end of the century, funding withered.

To be fair NASA only really achieved a DoD level of funding following Sputnik, exactly as you say. So unable to even remotely guess how to get there with what we had (let alone return) we turned inward.

I think this Moonshot is a middle finger to China and the start of a colony. I think the USA is betting the bank on refining H3 to produce staggering wealth like the Gold rushes and the economic supremacy after both world wars.

It wont work. It might mechanically work but lightning in a bottle seems to be very elusive. The USA spent its wealth in two ways: having a very good time and trying to confront evil in the world.

We lost more than we won but hundreds of millions are now born/live free because of it. Europe doesn’t care because they were never under a serious yolk of evil for a long period. Eastern Europe knows what happens when evil comes to stay and their gratitude is always heartwarming.

The majority today think a crisis is leaving their phone at home. (Always make me remember leaving my wallet in my other suit).

I remember knowing, not thinking, knowing we were all about to die several times as we sat in our basement listening to the am radio. I have to say I an much happier to have these snot heads blissfully unawares then live though the cold war. From 1961 to 1991 the world was always a single average persons bad decision from armageddon. One fighter pilot, one sub captain, one bomber crew or one American destroyer with a former German Captain and Sidney Poitier reporting on the bridge. (I know there are several reported Soviet close calls now too) At the time they never made a scandal, it was just the way it was. We had nuclear bombs everywhere. I myself have carried them. It is unbelievable to me now.

Wow. Really that really got away from me… sorry? 😢
