The Pentagon has awarded BlueHalo a contract worth up to $99.8 million for a new R&D program called “Leveraged Orbital Battlespace Optimization.” The Air Force Research Laboratory says LOBO will develop advanced technologies supporting U.S. space systems. Two initial task orders carry a combined $20.2 million ceiling, with work running through 2031.

Exactly what LOBO will build remains undisclosed. BlueHalo’s previous AFRL work has included autonomous space-based sensing, space situational awareness, battle-management command and control, and defensive counterspace technologies.BlueHalo, now part of AeroVironment, was the only bidder. The Pentagon initially obligated $1.7 million, but created a nearly $100 million contracting vehicle explicitly focused on optimizing the “orbital battlespace.”
