Oh come on, an M5.7 in Japan isn't even newsworthy. They literally occur all the time (as in: 20-30 a month). Even an M6 is sort of a yawn-o-rama (several of those per year). Yeah, Japan drew the short straw when it comes to earthquakes.
Japan’s NRA/TEPCO nearshore seawater monitoring sheet (12/16) notes sampling was suspended due to an “Off the Coast of Hokkaido and Sanriku Subsequent Earthquake Advisory.” Track for any follow on disruption to routine coastal monitoring cadence.

My take is yes, Japan gets a lot of quakes, and most are “normal.” But I’m flagging even the smaller ones right now because Japan’s own warnings have been pointing to elevated odds of a larger event in the nearer term. That context changes how I treat otherwise routine activity.
Separate but related to my point is TEPCO nearshore seawater monitoring sampling was suspended due to the “Mega Quake Advisory.” That reads to me like an operational disruption signal.
I’m not predicting anything. I’m just sharing what I’m watching and why, based on official warnings and observable operations.
