For the first time since the fall of the Assad regime, elections for the People's Assembly began in Syria on Sunday. For the first time, many Syrians feel they have a role in choosing their representatives to the assembly, unlike the past six decades.
After the vote of the first 128 seats, President Al-Sharah will designate 70 other people by direct appointment; which represents the third of the Parliament. This designation doesn’t represent a true and fair election and will allow the President to reserve at least a third of the assembly to devoted deputies. Syrian citizens should be able to vote for their own deputies to carry their voice in Damascus. This is how democracy should work.
