Moscow is offering to play a role if Washington and Tehran strike a deal, the Russian foreign minister has saidThe Middle East is like a minefield waiting for a chain reaction, and an escalation between the US and Iran could trigger it, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has warned.
Moscow does not seek to impose itself on the two nations, but is ready to play a constructive role if they manage to find a peaceful way forward, Lavrov said in an interview with RT’s Rick Sanchez on Wednesday.
Russia warned against escalation around Iran. FM Sergey Lavrov (RT interview) called Iran a “close partner and neighbor” and said the situation is “explosive” not only for Iran, but for the wider Middle East.
Separately, at the UN, Russia’s envoy Vasily Nebenzya warned any use of force against Iran is unacceptable and could trigger dangerous regional consequences.

Iran's Revolutionary Guards have seized two vessels in the Persian Gulf, carrying more than a million liters of smuggled fuel, the Tehran based Tasnim news agency reported. It also said that 15 foreign crew members caught on the vessels will be prosecuted, and that the arrests were made after intelligence work by the Iranian Navy, which had been monitoring the fuel smuggling that had allegedly been carried out over the past few months.
