Putin urges ‘victory,’ orders army into northern Ukraine

President Putin has ordered Russia’s army to advance into northern Ukraine, even as the White House tries to secure a deal to end the war.

General Valery Gerasimov, Russia’s top military official, said that Mr Putin wanted to expand a “buffer zone” in the Sumy and Kharkiv regions.

Gerasimov also claimed that Russia had “liberated” more than 30 villages but did not identify them. Moscow controls slivers of land in the two regions, but the epicentre of the fighting is further east, in the Donbas.

Russia releases video footage to challenge Kyiv over alleged attack

Russia's defense ministry released video footage on Wednesday (December 31) of what it said was a downed drone at a briefing intended to show Ukraine tried this week to attack a presidential residence and challenge Kyiv's denials that such an attack took place.

Moscow hit by drone attack on New Year’s night

On the night of December 31 to January 1, unidentified drones flew toward Moscow, prompting the closure of one of the capital’s airports, according to Russian Telegram channels.

At the same time, several public Telegram channels reported that a drone raid on Moscow was underway, prompting the closure of Domodedovo Airport.

Judging by the timing of the posts, the attack occurred while Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin was delivering his New Year’s address to Russians.

Customs is opening a preliminary inquiry toward a potential sanctions offence. This adds a hard legal track to the broader Baltic Sea infrastructure and enforcement risk picture.

Finland President Alexander Stubb New Year address: Russia relationship described as permanently changed. Finland’s security anchored in strong national defence plus NATO and EU membership. He also signals the US relationship is in flux and calls for tighter Nordic and European cooperation, while managing expectations that any “peace” outcome may not feel just.

Cyprus takes the rotating Presidency of the Council of the EU starting Jan. 1st to Jun 30th, 2026. Procedural but consequential. The Presidency sets agendas, chairs most Council work, and can accelerate or slow files tied to sanctions implementation, defense industrial coordination, and resilience priorities.

Russian special services’ officers carried out a special technical examination of a navigation unit of one of the Ukrainian UAVs shot down on the night of 29 December 2025 over Novgorod region. The experts managed to extract a file containing a flight plan from the navigation unit.
