The refinery reportedly ceased operations on Wednesday after the attack damaged its CDU-6 crude distillation unit.
CDU-6 is the refinery's only primary crude-processing unit. Without it, the refinery cannot process crude oil into gasoline, diesel, and other products, which effectively means the refinery is shut down.
The refinery has reportedly stopped offering petroleum products on the St. Petersburg commodities exchange, another indicator that production has halted.
Saratov processed about 5.8 million metric tons of crude in 2024, roughly 2.2% of Russia's total refining capacity, making it a significant regional refinery.
This is also reportedly the third time this year that the Saratov refinery has been forced to suspend operations because of Ukrainian drone attacks.
This is one of the more consequential refinery strikes of the year because it targets the plant's single crude-processing "heart" rather than just storage tanks or secondary equipment.
