Swedish officials are now describing the Gotland reinforcement as a "sharp" operation rather than an ordinary exercise.

Sweden's Armed Forces says the operation is being conducted "for real," with troops protecting the movement using live weapons.

Around 1,500 personnel are involved, while Swedish & German forces are securing Visby port and rapidly bringing defensive systems onto the island.

Swedish police documents also describe an elevated threat environment around OP SIWO, including concern over possible sabotage and intelligence collection by a foreign power. No concrete threat has been identified.

Germany says the increased NATO exercise activity on the northern & eastern flanks is being driven in part by Russia's increasingly aggressive and hybrid activity.
