U.S. company Voltaic Marine has demonstrated an air-defense configuration of its AEU39 unmanned surface vessel (USV).The AEU39 measures approximately 11.9 metres (39 feet) in length, reaches speeds of up to 41 km/h (25.5 mph), and reportedly has a range of around 9,300 km (5,778 miles).
The vessel can carry up to 1.8 tonnes (4,000 lbs) of payload. The AEU39 is equipped with solar panels and a 300 kWh battery, allowing it to reportedly remain on station in standby mode for weeks. A diesel engine can also be installed as a generator.
Through a collaboration with Moog Space and Defense, the USV has been fitted with a RIwP turret. The remotely operated weapon station can be configured with a 30 mm cannon and surface-to-air missiles such as the FIM-92 Stinger and APKWS II, among other effectors. The concept is intended to provide an autonomous maritime platform with persistent air-defense capabilities.
