WHAT WE KNOW & WHAT IS CONFIRMED/SOURCED:
UK authorities declared a major incident in Whelford beside RAF Fairford on Sept. 27 after several men were arrested on suspicion of Explosives Act offences. Army EOD is examining several vehicles. Police say the incident is contained, but have not disclosed what was found, whether an explosive device was recovered, suspect identities or motives, whether Fairford was the intended target, or any terrorism link.
Local reporting places the operation at around 01:00 BST. Footage shows at least four men detained at gunpoint. Homes on Horcott Road and nearby were evacuated door to door to a leisure centre. Whelford Road and surrounding roads were closed. Armed MOD & Gloucestershire Police were positioned around the perimeter, with Wiltshire & Thames Valley Police also seen. Around 30 emergency vehicles were present, including roughly six ambulances with four HART vehicles, three fire engines and support/command units. NPAS circled Fairford for about an hour. HART also supports EOD and security operations, so its presence alone does not establish a CBRN threat.
On Sept. 26, spotters reported a sharp USAF security escalation at Fairford, including Giant Voice alerts, aircraft dispersal, blocked or reinforced crash gates and an apparent move to FPCON Delta. USAF will not discuss specific force protection measures, so Delta remains unconfirmed. Officially, Delta is the highest FPCON and applies where a terrorist attack has occurred or intelligence indicates terrorist action against a specific location or person is imminent. Elevated security was also reported at RAF Lakenheath & RAF Mildenhall, including an East Anglian Air Ambulance being denied Mildenhall MATZ transit.
Reuters observed armed police blocking Fairford's main gate and a B-1B Lancer parked on base Sept. 27. The UK has authorized US use of RAF Fairford for strikes against Iranian missile sites. Iran's IRGC warned in July that bases used for attacks on Iran would be legitimate targets. There is currently no public evidence linking Iran, Russia or any other actor to these arrests.
A temporary RAF Fairford transponder mandatory zone was already in effect from Sept. 17 and amended Sept. 18 to operate H24, surface to FL100 within 9 NM. It predates this incident and should not be treated as evidence of the current threat.
