We have several around the farm. We leave them to their own devices and the do fine. For all of my grandfather and father’s life that is. Now my wife’s version of leaving them to their own devices includes 37 acres to play. 8000 sq ft of covered playing aka Barn.
A former garage that used to have a Bell 206B3 which was removed to make room for Hay Bales and cat life support equipment <Satan works in obviously ways.> Again her version of leaving them to themselves includes full medical and dental with Food stamps.
Last time I saw them outside they watched a mouse walk across the room. Just watched. If I have to move them I put on concertina gloves and my Paul Harrel, may he rest in peace, heavy canvas jacket with the stylish shredded sleeve and shoulder.
Addendum
Wife works in her city lab 4 days a week and I need to check on the cats too. So on those days I use all five dogs to perform “health welfare” runs. Keeps the cats alert and in shape. (Don’t write and say I’m mean. They are all Border collies for herding and won’t hurt the cats)
