Australia should indeed be anxious if it regards all the millions of Chinese staying in Australia as spies, the Chinese foreign ministry said Thursday in response to Australia listing China as an "extreme threat."

"If some people in Australia regard millions of people who travel back and forth between China and Australia and Chinese living in Australia as spies, there is no wonder they may feel nervous," ministry spokesperson Hua Chunying told a daily briefing on Thursday.

Hua's remarks came in response to the Australian Security Intelligence Organization listing China as an extreme threat on a supposedly secret country-by-country counter-intelligence index.

The organization's threat index had five levels: negligible, low, medium, high and extreme. China topped the list as the most extreme threat to national security, 9news.com.au, an Australia-based news website reported on Wednesday.

"It is more like the ruling party of Australia is making use of the issue to gain a reputation for safeguarding national security before the election and so it selected a rising China as a target," Han Feng, professor and deputy director-general at the National Institute of International Strategy, Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, told the Global Times on Thursday.

"Australia also raised this issue to ease US worries on Australia's ties with China. And it also wants to urge the US to maintain Western countries' leading role in the world," Han said.

Yes being aussie in oz this threat is all to real.
Considering we don't have anything in our arsenal if you call it that to defend ourselves. Most of the worlds coast Guard ships outrun,outgun and manoeuvre better than our ships. Chinese ships could sink us before they are visible on our radar. Land based lets not go there eg.lucky to have the dozen tanks we have operational let alone enough ammunition. Soldiers although well trained even with reserves from the whole country couldn't hold a state.Airforce same as tank issue. We simply could not stop invasion our coastline is huge . We are infact the easiest mainland target through all of Asia and Oceania combined and have a wealth of resources and strategic advantages for china. I know you guys are our ally but imo your to far away and your local fleets
A. Would be lucky to make a difference by the time they got here if they weren't surrounded and destroyed in the process.
B. Even with indian ocean and Pacific Ocean fleets the dangers are still there and our coastline is to large to try and regain ground as you would continuesly be flanked by the enemy with no possibility of refuel or resupply . Basically we would be fighting with sticks and stones. And public gun access well we won't go there either. BUGGER. But personally i would be prepared to die with bow and knife . Trying.
But as far as a majority of aussies worried about the chinese being spies i don't think so.
