China on Thursday denounced a US congressional commission's report accusing its media of alleged involvement in spying activities in the US, and urged relevant parties to desist from making wrong statements on China and play a positive role in bilateral ties.
The US-China Economic and Security Review Commission said in its latest annual report that Chinese State media had rapidly expanded overseas and that the expansion was part of a broader effort to exert greater control over how the country is depicted globally, Reuters reported.
The report, released on Wednesday, also recommended that media staff register as foreign agents, Reuters reported.
"The content of the report is sheer fiction and shows their bias against China," Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Geng Shuang said at a daily briefing on Thursday.
"We urge relevant US organizations to stop its wrong words and deeds toward China and play a constructive role in promoting the development of bilateral ties," he added.
