Security forces in the Maldives have sealed off the country's parliament and arrested two opposition legislators amid a deepening crisis over President Abdulla Yameen's refusal to free jailed politicians.

Interesting. I don't know anything about this situation so I shouldn't really be commenting but it is definitely in Chinese interests to get a pro-China Government in. Indian influence in the Indian ocean is a threat to Chinese hegemony in the region and so a large amount of islands in the Indian ocean where Chinese ships can dock will really go a long way to securing Chinese influence there.
 
There was a similar situation in the Balkans. The Russians influence Serbia. Last year they attempted to control the Former Yugoslav Republic of Mac., and a few weeks after, there was an Albanian uprising.
 
This is the US position, which is against the current President on the island:

"The United States called on the Maldives government and military to respect the rule of law after the president of the archipelago declared a state of emergency. “America stands with the people of Maldives. The Maldivian government and military must respect the rule of law, freedom of expression, and democratic institutions. The world is watching,” the White House National Security Council said in a post on Twitter."

A couple of months ago, this president joined the Belt and Road initiative, granting China geopolotical and economic access. The press said at the time.

"During the meeting, the Chinese premier told President Gayoom that Maldives is an "important partner" in the construction of the 21st century maritime Silk Road, Reuters reported."


One wonders, looking at the map, what will the CIA do?

In 1972 a crack commando unit was sent to prison by a military court for a crime they didn't commit. These men promptly escaped from a maximum security stockade to the Los Angeles underground. The plot thickens. The opposition on the island asked India ( US Strategic partner) to intervene militarily. Will China tolerate such move?
