Russia’s president Putin has displayed an unusual aggressiveness as of late. It is not entirely impossible that he will react outside the realm of reasonableness. Russia feels the West is weak and will capitulate if enough force is used. Additionally, Russia fears the possibility of invasion, and this fear is leading to paranoia. This is why Russia is taking such postures.
While there is no reasonable fear of further escalation, Russia is not behaving reasonably. We therefore judge the prospect of nuclear action as “possible”.
NATO has issued more sanctions on Russia in retaliation for invasion of Ukraine and sends more reinforcements to NATO allies. Additionally, NATO has officially activated its High Readiness Task Force. Additionally, the United States has ended arms control talks with Russia.
