On the U.K and the sun never setting on her soil, in my humble opinion, has long ago learned her lesson as far as empire building is concerned. As did the Romans. Empires that span the globe WILL eventually falter and fail. Too big, too hard to defend, too hard to administer effectively. HOWEVER; That said, anyone who underestimates the u.k.'s strength, or ability to project power, I think would have a rude awakening. Let's also remember that there are still 53 countries included in the commomwealth. Not exactly an empire like in her hayday, but still respectable...

One could argue that the effects of Britain's former empire can still be seen today. Also, the United Kingdom's position in the EU, NATO and G7, makes it part of a connected world. It's special relationship with the United States is also one of the most important in the world. Not an empire by any stretch, but Britain still has her influences.
