Russia seizes Ukrainian villages; Kyiv intercepts fewer ballistic missiles

Russian forces have continued their advance into Ukraine during the past week and claim to have seized eight villages along a battlefront now 1,250km (780 miles) long. “At this time, the Russian armed forces fully hold the strategic initiative,” Russian President Vladimir Putin told a meeting of military commanders on Tuesday, which marked his 73rd birthday.

Going from north to south, according to the Russian defence ministry, Ukraine ceded Otradnoye in the Kharkiv region, Mayskoye, Siversk Maly, Kuzminovka and Fedorovka in Donetsk, Verbovoye in Dnipropetrovsk and two villages in Zaporizhia, Novovasylivka and Novohryhorivka.

Putin claimed that Russian forces had seized almost 5,000 square kilometres (1,930 square miles) of Ukraine this year.

(CONFIRMED, ORGINAL SOURCE FOLLOWS)

A Russian drone violated Estonian airspace for 18 minutes today before flying back to Russia:
A "small airborne object" on Thursday violated Estonian airspace for a total of 18 minutes, authorities say.
"A smaller type of object remained in Estonian airspace for 18 minutes and came in[to Estonian airspace] a couple of kilometers. I cannot confirm with 100 percent certainty what it was. But I can confirm that it was not a large attack drone," Gert Kaju, head of the Defense Ministry's defense readiness department said, speaking at a press conference.
Beyond that, Kaju said he cannot broadly speculate on what the object might have been. "We can say that it was a small object. It could have been, for example, some kind of smuggler's drone," he went on.
