On 7 September at 19:02 local time, Ukrainian nuclear operator Energoatom announced that the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant had been reconnected to external electricity through the repaired 330-kV Ferosplavna-1 line. The plant is drawing approximately 11 MW from the grid.
This is a substantive change from the earlier situation in which Zaporizhzhia had been entirely dependent on emergency diesel generators since 20 August, with fuel conservation forcing intermittent operation of cooling pumps.
This materially reduces the immediate radiological-safety risk. The principal near-term concern had been exhaustion or failure of diesel generation resulting in loss of essential cooling and monitoring systems. Restoration of off-site power removes that immediate pathway while the connection remains stable.
It does not resolve the underlying vulnerability: the plant still has limited grid redundancy, remains in a combat zone, and has repeatedly lost external power.
