Finland plans to lift decades-old ban on hosting nuclear weapons
The government says the nation's defence environment has "significantly changed" since Russia's invasion of Ukraine.
Finland's President Alexander Stubb signed amendments to the Nuclear Energy Act, effective July 1 2026, lifting a long-standing ban on importing, transiting, and storing nuclear weapons to enable full NATO integration for national or collective defense.
With its 1,340 km border to Russia, the change removes legal barriers for potential NATO nuclear deterrence in the region without current plans for peacetime basing, prompting discussions on northern European security dynamics and possible Russian responses.
