Syria: Syrian rebel forces are reportedly preparing a statement to broadcast on state TV. Local sources confirm that rebels have already taken control of the state TV headquarters in Damascus.
When has a regime change in an Arab country ever lead to something better? Will this be the end of the suffering of the Syrian population, or the beginning of something worse?
TV headquarters in the main Umaweyen Square is under Opposition control, and they plan to release a televised address soon.
Could always just have turned off transponder. I don't think they'd want any rebels looking at adsb to know where they land.Lots of unconfirmed reports that what was presumably Assad's plane has suddenly vanished after being denied landing in Lebanon. Possibly crashed? Or shot down? Take with a grain of salt.
I’d be surprised if he waited until a couple of hours ago to bug out, and not left several days ago.Lots of unconfirmed reports that what was presumably Assad's plane has suddenly vanished after being denied landing in Lebanon. Possibly crashed? Or shot down? Take with a grain of salt.
I'd imagine that there were many consultations for security of the region going foward in Doha. With how factionalized the rebels are some kind of central, big-tent authority is needed to keep the country stable through a transitional period for a better government than Assad's. Requires both coordination from Turkey, Iran, Qatar, and Russia, the UN, as well as cooperation from rebels. Very much a risk of this becoming faction battle Royale a la 2014 all over again with more suffering of the population.Unfortunately, I have a feeling that this is only the beginning, and the opposition factions are going to turn on each other to achieve total control of Syria once the Assadists are fully out of the picture.
I especially can't see this ending well for the Kurds. They're now fully surrounded by Turkey and Turkish proxies.
He went to Moscow with his family days ago but then returned to Syria on his own. I saw reports that he was making called to just about every world leader trying to strike a deal. It's possible that he was delusional enough to think he could work something out.I’d be surprised if he waited until a couple of hours ago to bug out, and not left several days ago.
But who knows.
BREAKING: Syrian Rebels announce on Telegram: "The tyrant Bashar al-Assad fled. We declare the city of Damascus free from the tyrant Bashar al-Assad"
That would be epic. Also: It did drop some height. Could have done some kind of desert landing near the Libanon border and exfil the president there ASAP, but it being shot down can't be ruled out imo.
More from the Syrian rebels: "This is the moment that the displaced and prisoners have long been waiting for, the moment of return home and the moment of freedom after decades of oppression and suffering."
