FORTRESS - The Military Prepper Plan

If nothing else is available mold penicillin and mosses make acceptable wound treatments. I know they’re not regulated and low or of unknown potency.

But if it is a question of nothing and dying from gangrene I’d give some thought to sphagnum peat.

I’ve had universal success with recluse spider bites and seriously nasty puss filled infections with carbolic acid salve.

No shelf life on any of those products.
Sorry about the graphic wound description, just wanted to illustrate what is possible beyond traditional pharmaceuticals.

Clean water will take you farther than most anything.

Capsaicin or pepper derivatives were used for the treatment of giardia or intestinal parasites. Also little to no medical literature available on this, no profit motive.
It wont work on everything but if it’s a choice of 72 hours of cramps and dysentery. Might try a tablespoon of capsaicin powder.

Other intestinal treatments for things like cholera were clean water hydration frequently with a salt and sugar solution.
Chewing tobacco will work on some types of plant secretions irritants.
If you’ve ever been in stinging nettle chewing tobacco stops the burn of stinging nettle almost immediately. Jewel weed is effective treatment for poison ivy.
Bottom line for me would be good supply of bar soap, water purification ability and how to make Dakin’s solution, 4 cups boiled water 1/2 teaspoon of baking soda, and 11/2 tablespoons of plain 5% bleach. Good for everything from serious skin irritation to deep wound irrigation.

I know I dumped a lot and most of it is all non-traditional folk treatments.

Knowledge is power and when modern medicine is gone you have everything to gain by trying what was done for 1000’s of years. Well it’s a no brainer for me.

If your really desperate and adventurous and intravenous hydration and feeding is not available you could always try rectal hydration and feeding. I’ve no experience on this 🤣 and only read about it cursorily.
But again if it’s a choice between watching someone die from dehydration or something that might possibly work when nothing will stay down. Stuff your queasy stomach and distaste in a box and close the lid.

I think bleeding patients has universally been proven ineffective. Any benefits from this procedure probably were derived from the short term neuralepinephrine release into the system in response to blood loss.
Ill stick to a cold showers for this treatment
Never underestimate the value of garlic or crushed raw garlic on wounds. Has natural antibacterial, antifungal and some antiviral properties that are well documented. This can be reviewed in PubMed which is a public medical paper/report database you can search. There are also retrospective studies that show Mexican populations with a higher intake of natural chilli and garlic diets have a lower incidence of GIT pathologies and lower gut parasite levels. There are again PubMed studies that show a positive affect on cancers and other chronic health issues by garlic and chilli. There are also studies that show lychees have a positive effect on type 2 diabetes and can drop blood sugar. There have been reports in India of people eating excess lychees and developing hypoglycaemic emergencies, some of which has been fatal. I also use them to lower my own insulin needs.

The Vietcong also used a lot of honey in boiled water for IV substitutes and wound care. Not always successful but did increase survival rates. Searching PubMed is a good source of validated natural treatments from research studies that are not funded by drug companies but are independent fundamental research.

Hope some of this might have been useful.

I’ve been amazed at how quickly honey (some are better than others) encourages wounds and lacerations. Keep a pint of NZ honey in my medical cabinet.
I’ve also used capsaicin as worm treatment for my dogs. Word of warning don’t let them inside for a day or two.

My late father knew how to make moldy bread poultices and mustard plasters. I more or less remember his descriptions of how to do them. He grew up before antibiotics were widely available.
In the 70’s I remember a TV news person comment about how when he was child in the 30’s visiting his grandmother who lived in the south. He asked her why she kept a tin of moldy bread around. For infections child!

Also knew a guy from Arkansas who kept a glass bottle of “something”. One teaspoon in eight oz of water. Tasted like a mix or turpentine and white lightening. Maybe some juniper berries.
Would clear your sinuses and knock you out cold.
I keep a small bottle of deconcocted wild lettuce mixed with gin. A tablespoon will act on pain and help you sleep like a baby.

My dad was born in rural Nebraska in 1931, so same time period. Whiskey in hot water (with honey and lemon) was another remedy. I seem to remember garlic and honey, too?

I remember when my dog ate all the bird's eye chillis off the bush. Next morning she was dragging her bottom across cold wet grass while howling at the sky.

Went it comes to honey, Leatherwood has the best outcome for wound healing. Has been used for MRSA wounds for good effect.
