If the printed remarks of Ruthfuss are any indication, it's possible that Russia will endeavor to combat western propaganda, which is combating eastern propaganda, by radicalizing the Baltics and Finland. Donbass could become east Europe's Palestine. The people of Donbass could become the brothers of the disenfranchised, and each Donbass fighter killed a martyr. This could be made possible by highlighting the oppression faced by the disenfranchised in the east, some of which was pointed out by Ruthfuss. That is, "non-citizen status," "discrimination," "barred from certain professions," and as we now observe in Finland, their property being ceased by the government. We're talking about then a radical group formed around Russian ex-pats, who can be constantly reminded of their mistreatment, in order to enrage them, to mobilize them, and to increase their loyalty to their ethnic homeland, Russia.

Such a circumstance leads only to Russia's own CIA-style color revolution, perhaps complimented by the support of Russian "hybrid" warfare, in order to aid in and to ensure the liberation of oppressed and marginalized loyal ethnic Russians who have been made victims of the west, but who are struggling to regain their pride, and their freedom. That is, with the help of Russian media, which will endeavor to plant the seed of that perception into their minds.

NATO's deployment of personnel and equipment to the Baltic states may have been in anticipation of such a strategy though. NATO forces in country can be utilized to support efforts to put down "Russian-backed rebels," to "stabilize" the country whole simultaneously securing the border with Russia so that indigenous forces don't have to. NATO will then be positioned directly at Russia's border, while additional NATO forces would be conducting "peacekeeping operations" in the affected Baltic states. NATO naval forces will need to secure the sea ports, and ground forces and also air forces would need to secure the airports, in order to prevent Russia from supplying personnel and equipment to the opposition forces. With the border, seaports and airports secured, "Russian-backed separatists" should be without supply - their logistics cut off from foreign covert aid. Russia will have anticipated this, however. The necessary personnel and equipment will likely be prepositioned. Supplemental personnel and equipment will arrive as seaports and airports are captured by opposition forces, which will be a priority for the opposition.

It's not important whether or not Finland's behavior can be legitimized. Finland does face an existential threat in Russia, and residents of Russian ethnicity and especially Russian citizenship are certainly part of that threat. I agree that it's logical to take precautions in order to limit that threat. What's import is that the residents of Finland who are of Russian ethnicity and citizenship will not agree that Finland's behavior is reasonable. They will, rightly, perceive themselves to be oppressed, marginalized, and Russian media is capable of capitalizing on that, increasing radicalization.

I intend no argument on the subject of the ethics of Finland or the Baltic states. I'm only pointing out that those actions play into the hands of the Russians, enabling Russian propaganda to radicalize the effected members of those nation's populations. It's not important whether or not Finland's behavior can be legitimized. Finland does face an existential threat in Russia, and residents of Russian ethnicity and especially Russian citizenship are certainly part of that threat. The western order engaged Russia in Georgia. Russia played for a status quo. The west engaged Russia with Euromaidan in Ukraine. Russia played for a status quo. The west engaged Russia in Syria. Russia played for a status quo. The west engaged Russia in Belarus (White Russia). Russia may respond by engaging the west in Finland, Latvia, Lithuania, and Estonia. Belarus may be western order's Battle of Stalingrad. Once the trigger is pulled on Belarus, Russia's "Great Patriotic War" will perhaps begin only then. We've heard the bear growl. We're hearing the distant echos of its roar. The west may soon see the bears teeth, very suddenly - if that trigger is pulled.

Put once told a story of his childhood, saying "I spotted a huge rat and pursued it down the hall until I drove it into a corner. It had nowhere to run. Suddenly it lashed around and threw itself at me. I was surprised and frightened. Now the rat was chasing me." Today the west is attempting to contain Russia, to surround Russia, and engaging in salami tactics, gradually capturing territories within Russia's sphere of influence and also attempting to advance the western order generally. However, it's said that the most dangerous animal is one which has been cornered. Putin has colorfully illustrated that he understands that. It's prominent in his thoughts. The bear is cornered. It will pounce. Assuming Putin is the man he portrays himself to be.
