Gotland Sweden Without Power, Internet, or Other Services Island-Wide

⚠️
Gotland without power. According to SMS from the electricity company, the cable to the mainland has been disconnected.
Hopefully not the Russians this time but damn how vulnerable we are.

The Island of Gotland in the Baltic Sea, roughly 100 miles off the coast of Sweden with a population of around 60,000, is currently suffering from a major power outage, with a near-total energy, internet, and cell service blackout being reported across the island, cause still unknown.

Remember, Gotland is quite vulnerable because it gets most of its electricity through three undersea cables from the mainland. These cables carry power under the sea to the island. If something goes wrong with the cables or the mainland connection, the island can lose electricity.

The cables work like this: electricity from the mainland is converted to a special type (direct current) so it can travel long distances under the sea with minimal energy loss. When it reaches Gotland, it’s converted back into the regular type (alternating current) that homes and businesses can use.

Over the years, Gotland’s electricity supply has been discussed many times because of concerns about sabotage, storms, or other disruptions, any fault whether technical, weather-related, or accidental can cause outages so it could really be' everything.
