Helena recovery operations.

I am not suggesting that there is some nefarious reason why the government takes so long to respond. And they aren't incompetent boobs either. In a disaster, (most) everyone is well meaning. They want to help. Anyone who has worked in Emergency Services knows this.

The issue is that the government is a behemoth, and it takes time for them to get moving. And, as RiffRaff said, the bigger the disaster, the longer it takes because the more resources that are needed.

So always assume that you will be on your own for a while and gather what you need to take care of yourself.

I have always felt that people should prepare for 14 days as an absolute minimum for emergency supplies. Even after a "normal" disaster like a severe weather event, it can take a while for the supply chains to be reestablished.

The low-level federal responders who do the actual work are not incompetent boobs. The administrators who sit in their offices and make decisions without being on the ground are the problem. The people in the field should be calling the shots, not the REMFs in Washington.

Mate I'd take Trump as leader any day. As far as living in a country with the biggest target on it on this planet, naa all good ,very grateful where I'm positioned globally. As far as your question goes feel free to elaborate. Our 2 party system are both useless and bad choices. Our government is like most others. I would gladly take Trump off you to run our country.
 

Soul-searching and regret over unheeded Helene warnings​

ASHEVILLE, N.C. (AP) — Before Hurricane Helene’s landfall last week, the National Weather Service began an all-out blitz to alert emergency planners, first responders and residents across the Southeast that the storm’s heavy rains and high winds could bring disaster hundreds of miles from the coast. Warnings blared phrases such as “URGENT,” “life threatening” and “catastrophic” describing the impending perils as far inland as the mountains of North Carolina and Tennessee. Smartphones buzzed with repeated push alerts of flash floods and dangerous winds. States of emergency were declared from Florida to Virginia. And the weather service reached back to 1916 for a precedent, correctly predicting Helene would rank among the “most significant weather events” the Asheville, North Carolina, area had ever seen.

But the red flags and cataclysmic forecasts weren’t enough to prevent the still-rising death toll. The number has soared to at least 215 across six states. “We reserve this strong language for only the worst situations,” he said. “But it’s hard to go out and tell people this is going to totally change the landscape of western North Carolina.

An AP analysis of social media postings and cellphone alerts found more than a dozen were sent by Buncombe County and the National Weather Service on Wednesday and Thursday alone. And the language used to convey the threat from Helene — “extremely rare event,” “prepare for a life-threatening storm,” “Act Now!” — became increasingly dire as authorities urged people to seek higher ground and evacuate in some cases. The most alarming ones said the destruction could be the worst in a century, referencing the “Great Flood of 1916” in which 80 people were killed.

In one of its repeated postings on the social platform X, Wilkinson’s staff pleaded with residents to take its warnings “very seriously” and have multiple means of receiving alerts.

While fema is not reaching out to these areas. Instead of soliciting individuals and org to help they are refusing there assistance and telling them they can’t work on their own.
 
I am seeing some very disturbing reports on X of FEMA incomitance and arrogance. Here are some examples.

I lived up there for over a decade and just moved away in ‘21 and I can tell you, this Washington BS attitude won’t fly when people are trying to find or feed their families. People are in survival mode. These suits they sent there and filled up the Hotels and then turned the needy locals away, they are barking up the wrong tree. My prediction, they keep it up, they will get run out and just let the locals and Americans help them help. Keep those FEMA suits out of there.

And evidently much of the local law enforcement needs to be run out as well. Anyone who's participated in denying help to our fellow Americans need to be run right out of the area. Though, that may just be sending them to someone else to run over.

It is long past time to "just say no" to bad leadership. When they threaten to arrest someone for collecting his belongings on his property after a disaster, just say "no thanks" and when they confiscate donations and repurpose them for other emergencies such as feeding illegals, just say "no thank you" again and again. Of course, just saying no may require doing so with a loud voice.

Hundreds of thousands if not millions are speaking out. It's not a race issue, it's not even technically a money issue. Its a humanity issue, and those who are crying out are ignored, ridiculed, canceled, fined, and even imprisoned. When will we have actual representation from our elected officials? Keep Shouting I guess, and eventually shit will get bad enough to where the blind will see their true colors, and maybe we can get enough people on the same page to make a difference. Provided it's not already too late.
