Hurricane Melissa | Cuba: The storm is projected to cross over eastern Cuba Tuesday evening. Prior to arrival, there is an increasing risk of damaging winds, heavy rainfall, and peak storm surge heights potentially reaching 7 to 11 feet accompanied by large and destructive waves. Rainfall of 15 to 20 inches is expected today through Wednesday, resulting in life-threatening and potentially catastrophic flash flooding and landslides. Deteriorating infrastructure throughout Cuba, including an already fragile power grid and a limited capacity to provide basic goods and services, may further inhibit rapid health and emergency response.
This is a dangerous storm. Keep friends and loved ones advised of your whereabouts via phone, text, and social media.
U.S. citizens potentially in the path of the hurricane should decide whether to leave now or be prepared to shelter in place. Travel is conducted at your own risk. The U.S. government cannot guarantee your safety traveling to airports, borders, or during onward travel. Only attempt to depart from or travel within Cuba if you believe it is safe to do so. For current or future flight disruptions, please check your flight status directly with airlines. Cuba’s Ministry of Transportation has suspended train, bus, and flight services in the eastern region, as well as maritime transport in the west.
U.S. citizens should call +(53) (7) 839-4100 to speak to the Embassy duty officer if they need emergency assistance.
