China’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning has reiterated Beijing’s position on the India & China border dispute, stating that “Zangnan is China’s territory” and that China “has never recognized the so called Arunachal Pradesh’ illegally set up by India,” in response to questions about an Arunachal Pradesh born Indian citizen’s treatment while transiting Shanghai on 21 November.

India has lodged a formal demarche in both Beijing and New Delhi and restated that Arunachal Pradesh is “indisputably” Indian territory and that its residents are fully entitled to hold and travel on Indian passports.

India’s MEA has formally condemned the “arbitrary detention” of an Indian citizen from Arunachal Pradesh at Shanghai Airport, saying the case was taken up “strongly” with China in both Beijing and New Delhi.

THE STATEMENT:
Reaffirms that Arunachal Pradesh is an integral and inalienable part of India, calling this a “self evident fact” that “no amount of denial” from China can change.

Accuses Chinese authorities of violating multiple international air travel conventions and their own 24 hour visa free transit rules by blocking a valid Indian passport in transit.

Warns that while both sides have worked since October 2024 to stabilise the border and expand people centric engagement, such incidents undermine mutual trust and the gradual normalisation of bilateral ties.

Reiterates that peace and tranquillity in the border areas is a prerequisite for overall progress in India & China relations.

Satellite imagery and open reporting indicate that China is steadily building out a network of high altitude airfields, heliports and dual use infrastructure across the Tibetan Plateau near the Line of Actual Control with India.

New and upgraded bases in Tibet and Xinjiang are gaining extended runways, hardened shelters, fuel and ammunition storage and UAV support, in some cases within roughly 25 to 150 km of the frontier. This reduces earlier performance penalties at altitude and gives the PLA Air Force faster, more sustained reach into sectors facing Ladakh, Sikkim and Arunachal Pradesh.

Taken together with new roads, rail links and border “villages,” the picture is of a long term, logistics supported military footprint designed to make any future crisis along the LAC more favorable to Beijing.

Arunachal Pradesh is destined to become an arena of confrontation between India and China.

The area is strategically important as India's gateway to East Asia, a key defense outpost against China, and - perhaps most importantly - as an access point to what is arguably the most valuable natural resource in this part of the world, i.e. water flowing out of the Himalayas and the Tibetan Plateau (sometimes referred as the Earth's "third pole").

The fact that we haven't yet had a major crisis in this part of the world is mainly due to both powers being occupied elsewhere (with India plotting its next move in JK, and China gearing up for an invasion of Taiwan).
