Hamas fires rockets at Israeli cities; Israel issues evacuation orders in Gaza

Palestinian militant group Hamas said it fired a barrage of rockets at cities in Israel’s south on April 6 in response to Israeli “massacres” of civilians in Gaza.
Israel’s military said about 10 projectiles were fired, but most were successfully intercepted. Israel’s Channel 12 reported a direct hit in the southern city of Ashkelon.
Shortly after the rocket firing, the Israeli military posted on social media platform X a new evacuation order, instructing residents of several districts in Deir Al-Balah city in the central Gaza Strip to leave their areas, citing earlier rocket firing.

💥NEW: Another U.S. MQ-9 Reaper drone was shot down by the Houthis in Yemen, sources tell Fox News. This is the fourth MQ-9 Reaper drone shot down by the Houthis since March 3rd, and the fourth shot down under the Trump administration
It is the third U.S. MQ-9 drone shot down over Yemen since U.S. Central Command began daily airstrikes on the Houthis on March 15th. The U.S. military has carried out 25 straight days of bombing, including with B-2 stealth bombers dropping bunker buster bombs, and yet the Houthis continue to fire missiles to shoot these expensive U.S. assets down.

📢 Overnight, the IDF expanded its offensive against Hamas in the northern Gaza Strip, with troops pushing into the Gaza City neighborhoods of Daraj and Tuffah.

The military says the operation is intended to expand the buffer zone along the Gaza border. In most areas, the IDF has been expanding the buffer zone up to around 2 kilometres deep into Gaza.

So far, the IDF says troops killed several terror operatives and destroyed observation posts, tunnels, and other Hamas infrastructure. The IDF says it is enabling Palestinian civilians to evacuate the area "for their safe

A long-range ballistic missile was fired earlier today by the Iranian-backed Houthi terrorist group in Western Yemen at Israel, with the missile being intercepted outside of Israeli Airspace by the U.S. Army Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) Battery deployed in Negev Desert. Parts of the solid rocket booster from one of the THAAD Interceptors fell near Dura in the West Bank.

According to the Saudi-based Gulf Research Center and several Arab media outlets, the Yemeni Presidential Leadership Council (PLC), the internationally recognized government of Yemen supported by the United States, Saudi Arabia and other Gulf Nations, is massing upwards of 80,000 troops for a major offensive to retake the Houthi-controlled port city of Hodeidah on the western coast of Yemen.
This would be by far the largest offensive of the ongoing Yemeni Civil War, which has seen the PLC and its allies in the Southern Transitional Council and the Yemeni National Resistance slowly grow in firepower and influence since 2017. The capture of Hodeidah would effectively surround the Iranian-backed Houthis in Western Yemen, enabling future operations to retake the capital of Sana’a which has been under Houthi control since the war began in 2014.

Footage showing daytime and nighttime air ops from the decks of the USS Carl Vinson (CVN-70) and the USS Harry S. Truman (CVN-75), both deployed to the U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) area-of-responsibility, as they carry out airstrikes against the Iranian-backed Houthi terrorist group in Western Yemen.
I hope someone is explaining it to them that THIS is not a US bombing campaign. "YET" In military terms this is called softening up the target in preparation for the real thing.

More info

U.S. Central Command issued a statement declaring the “destruction” of Ras Isa (also sometimes written Ras Issa) earlier today, which did not provide details about the scale and scope of the strikes on the port. At the time of writing, American authorities do not appear to have released any imagery from the operation. This looks to be the first time the U.S. military has publicized the destruction of a major facility in Yemen.

The United States has destroyed the Ras Isa oil port in Yemen.

According to the U.S. military, the port was used by the Houthis to receive fuel that supports their military operations.

It was also reported that at least 20 airstrikes were carried out on Yemen’s capital, Sanaa.

Additionally, the U.S. State Department stated that the Chinese satellite technology company Chang Guang is directly supporting the Houthis by providing them with satellite imagery used to target U.S. warships and other vessels in the Red Sea.

French Frigate Targeted by Houthis in the Red Sea:
According to a release from the French General Staff and EUNAVFOR ASPIDES, on an unspecified date, a FREMM multi-mission frigate of the French Navy shot down a Houthi drone at close range in the Red Sea.
Footage from the engagement shows the frigate using its 76mm main gun to engage the drone. Not a lot of details were given on the engagement, nor was the name of the vessel disclosed. However, only two French FREMM multi-mission frigates, FS Alsace (D656) and FS Languedoc (D653), could have been involved.
EUNAVFOR ASPIDES: Ongoing EU-led naval task force working alongside U.S.-Coalition navies to safeguard commercial shipping in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden from Houthi strikes.
Precision Engagement with 76mm Gun
The FS Alsace, an air-defense variant of the FREMM class, engaged the Houthi drone at close range, opting for its 76mm OTO Melara gun over more expensive missile systems. This choice reflects a strategic shift towards cost-effective defense measures against asymmetric threats like drones.
The successful interception demonstrates the crew's proficiency and the weapon system's reliability in real-world combat scenarios.

Pays to remember that it's actually not easy to sink a warship by bombing its superstructure. This is a lesson the Japanese learned during WW2 - despite fairly horrendous damage caused by the Kamikaze pilots, the US warships thus attacked usually managed to limp back to port, and, consequently, the Japanese never managed to sink anything larger than a CVE (short for "Combustible, Vulnerable, Expendable" - as the saying went back in the day).

Similarly, CV-59 Forrestal did not sink despite a massive fire and munitions cookoff on its flight deck.

With large warships, you really need to damage them below the waterline to have a shot at a sinking - and that's obviously something drones and missiles are ill suited for.
