Japan Unveils New Anti Ship Missile:

Japan’s Acquisition, Technology & Logistics Agency (ATLA) has unveiled a new modular long-range anti-ship missile prototype, using an XKJ301-1 turbojet to test propulsion, guidance, seeker, and data link technologies for extended range naval strike.

The missile uses an open-architecture, multi mission airframe with internal bays for different payload modules (dual or IR seekers, jammer/decoy units, EO/IR sensors, high power warhead), aimed at island and chokepoint defense in Japan’s southwestern approaches.

A follow on phase around 2027 will test additional airframes, upgraded sensors, and refined low observable structures, as Japan builds a longer-range coastal and island based strike layer for its maritime defense posture.

South Korea & Japanese Friction:

South Korea’s navy has indefinitely postponed a joint search and rescue exercise with Japan’s Maritime Self Defense Force that had been scheduled for late November.

The move follows Japan’s decision to scrap planned refueling support for South Korean aircraft at an Okinawa base after learning the jets had recently flown near the contested Dokdo/Takeshima islets.

Officials in both countries say they want to contain the dispute and avoid reversing broader improvements in Japan & ROK defense ties and trilateral cooperation with the United States.

Japan’s Foreign Ministry confirms it will host the Proliferation Security Initiative (PSI) maritime interdiction exercise “Pacific Shield 25” from December 2nd to 4th in Tokyo and in the sea and airspace off the Boso Peninsula, followed by a PSI Operational Experts Group meeting on December 5th.

The drill will bring together Japan, Australia, New Zealand, South Korea, Singapore and the United States, with additional observers from Indo Pacific states, to rehearse interdiction of weapons of mass destruction, ballistic missiles and related materials within international law and national legislation.

Japan will employ Self Defense Forces units, the Coast Guard and other agencies in academic sessions, tabletop exercises and live at sea training, marking the fifth time it has hosted a PSI exercise and the second time it has hosted a PSI OEG meeting.

Army Recognition, citing a Kyodo News exclusive, reports that Japan is in informal talks with the Philippines about a possible export of the Type 03 Chu SAM medium range surface to air missile system. According to these reports, the Takaichi administration plans to scrap current rules that limit defense exports to a narrow set of non lethal cases in the first half of next year, after which formal studies on a Type 03 transfer could begin.

If it proceeds, this would be the first overseas sale of the Type 03 system, which is the Japan Ground Self Defense Force’s primary truck mounted medium range SAM and a key layer in Japan’s own air defense network. The Armed Forces of the Philippines reports that Philippine and Japan Self Defense Force units have completed their third Bilateral Maritime Cooperative Activity in the West Philippine Sea, held on 29 November inside the Philippine exclusive economic zone.

According to AFP and Japanese media, the Philippines deployed BRP Antonio Luna (FF-151), an AW-159 helicopter and a C-208B surveillance aircraft, while Japan sent destroyer JS Harusame (DD-102) with an SH-60K helicopter. Japan’s Defense Ministry has briefed residents of Yonaguni on plans to deploy a new “anti-air electronic warfare unit” at the JGSDF garrison in fiscal 2026.
