Japan’s Atomic Energy Basic Act, specifically Article 2 says that nuclear power must be only used for research or peaceful purposes. That makes the use on a weapons platform that much harder. Also, several governments over the years have specifically stated that would prevent a nuclear powered Japanese warship (or self-defense ship). I think they stated that in 2017, 2024 and even last year. So if they’re now saying something different, thats really a big change. I think they’d have to revise the law though to be in full compliance. I think some of it has to do with South Korea not just talking about SSNs but actually having the wheels in motion to build one.
