Kīlauea Episode 39: 1,400 Foot Lava Fountains

USGS HVO reports Kīlauea’s Episode 39 fountaining began 8:20 p.m. HST Dec 23 and ran just under 6 hours, ending about 2:13 a.m. HST Dec 24. Peak fountain height was about 1,400 feet (425 m).

Pays to remember Kilauea - like all shield volcanoes - is incapable of producing major explosive eruptions. The very concept of a "pelean eruption", where lava just calmly flows out of the volcano and out to sea (casually obliterating anything in its way) is named after Hawaiian volcanoes.

In fact, that's what enabled the Hawaiian islands to grow so large (measured from its true base at the bottom of the ocean, Mauna Kea is the highest mountain in the world).
