Those of us who were living in NYC back then did NOT forget. WE did NOT vote for Mamdani! He was voted in by people who've moved into the city within the past 20 years. Mainly a mix of young young people from around the country and immigrants -- many of them from the Middle East. We have ZERO say in who moves here or who votes in our elections.

It is a matter of statistics:
Non-Hispanic Whites: 33.8%. Historically, they have been the most represented group in boroughs such as Manhattan and Staten Island.
36.6% of current New York City residents were born abroad.
As of 2026, the average number of children per woman in New York stands at approximately 1.50. This fertility rate (or total fertility rate) places the region well below the replacement level, estimated at 2.1 children per woman.

In 20 years, the gap will widen.

There are plenty of newer ethnicities that share the same values as old-time New Yorkers and have added a lot of vibrancy (and great food). They're immigrants who, like my grandparents, want to be Americans. But there are also some who look down on our culture and values and want to superimpose their own. It's unsettling to.watch the latter gain political power.

Sounds like “the city” (by a large majority) forgot.

I recommend fleeing. Just move out. You cannot “save it” as most people there think there is nothing wrong

I've thought about, believe me. It's complicated though. I've got an adult son with autism who needs services (those are hard to get outside of the city) and is in a transitions program. My younger son is in his senior year of h.s. and my mom is very frail and elderly and can't be moved from her assisted living facility. Also, I've never learned to drive....

We are seriously considering getting out though and moving somewhere upstate,maybe in a year or two, if circumstances permit. Things are really going downhill here.
