Lockheed, Northrop Team Up to Rebuild Weapon Stockpile

The Department of Defense continues efforts to rebuild its dwindling munitions stockpile as it uses up critical missiles in the wars against Iran and Russia in support of Ukraine. The DOD on Monday signed a multibillion dollar framework agreement with Lockheed Martin and Northrop Grumman to accelerate components production for the Patriot missile and THAAD interceptors. RTX on Monday won a Navy contract to modernize ship weapons systems. Anduril Industries is eying a Baltimore port to build out drone boats, according to reports Monday.

The news comes after Lockheed Martin on July 29 announced $58.6 billion in DOD awards to accelerate PAC-3 production. That followed multiyear framework agreements from earlier this year for Lockheed, RTX, BoeingBA and BAE SystemsBAESY to increase production for complex, "exquisite-class" missiles and interceptors.

General Motors was able to retool a car factory to make the outer shells of the Patriot missiles. They've managed to make the delivery to Lockheed just 22 days after signing the contract. It's now clear that the argument for preserving that industrial base is not simply nostalgia for a previous bygone era. It simply is the case that you cannot improvise precision manufacturing overnight once it has disappeared.
