If you want to launch nukes you don't need a reason by using cw against own troops. Seriously.
The nukes can fly without reason, simply because you realise who the hell do you answer to after . Realising nuke retaliation on Russia while America and Europe are nuked. How long before you get arrested after global nuclear exchange.

I understand that. However, Putin seems to *want* a reason, just like he didn't *need* a reason to invade Ukraine, but he worked really hard to create one. Faking attacks on one's own people in order to justify a war predates the birth of every single person on this forum.

Yes but really all he needs to do is announce to his public seek shelter western forces have launched nuclear attack. Then he launches and no-one is any wiser. For someone to want a reason when they never needed one doesn't make sense.

Exactly. Nothing Putin has done has made any sense. I've stopped analyzing the man as a rational actor.

By the way, Russian citizens being evacuated to nuclear shelters would almost guarantee US strategic forces going to DEFCON 2 immediately.

But the use of one single nuclear weapon over Ukrainian territory *might* give Putin everything he needs.

I do agree with you tho, even if i think that Russia could use nuke in response to NATO actions too ( Poland speaking of sending troops for example, or Russia starting to lose the war in UA, so attacking due to NATO weapon deliveries ), even if i think it's unlikely now
