Navy Secretary John Phelan exits administration amid Iran war

Navy Secretary John Phelan will leave the Trump administration “effective immediately,” the Pentagon announced Wednesday, marking the latest departure of a top defense official this year.

“On behalf of the Secretary of War and Deputy Secretary of War, we are grateful to Secretary Phelan for his service to the Department and the United States Navy,” chief Pentagon spokesperson Sean Parnell said in a statement posted on X.

It was not immediately clear why Phelan will be departing his post. Parnell said that the new acting Navy secretary will be Undersecretary Hung Cao.

Phelan’s departure comes amid the U.S. naval blockade of Iran. The American military has seized two ships in the Strait of Hormuz, which Iran has called a violation of the precarious ceasefire between the two countries.

Navy secretary fired after feud over Trump’s ‘Golden Fleet’ with Pentagon leaders, including Hegseth

Secretary of the Navy John Phelan was fired Wednesday after months of feuding with his Pentagon bosses, particularly over his handling of President Trump’s “Golden Fleet” shipbuilding initiative. Tensions between Phelan, War Secretary Pete Hegseth and Deputy War Secretary Stephen Feinberg had been simmering for months, according to the New York Times and a Republican source.
Phelan didn’t get along with Pentagon brass and his management and leadership style was “incongruent” with Hegseth and Feinberg, one GOP source familiar with the fired Navy secretary’s standing at the Pentagon told The Post.

Hung Cao will become Acting Secretary of the Navy, the Pentagon announced.

Congratulations to the new Secretary of the NavyHung Cao!
Most of his career focused on special operations as an explosive ordnance disposal officer and deep sea diving officer. He often worked right alongside Navy SEALs and other special forces teams, handling bomb disposal, counter-IED missions, and underwater operations in tough spots. One early highlight was in 1999, when he led the dive team that recovered the bodies of John F. Kennedy Jr., his wife Carolyn, and her sister after their plane crash off Martha's Vineyard.
Cao is a combat veteran with deployments to Iraq, Afghanistan, and Somalia. He spent years disarming roadside bombs and explosive threats on the battlefield, and in his final tour he directed sensitive operations, counter-drone work, and other key tasks for special operations command. He picked up several big awards along the way, including the Bronze Star Medal and the Defense Superior Service Medal.
