Russia’s Dmitry Medvedev on Lithuania potentially hosting nuclear weapons: “No one will step in for them. The famous Article 5... will not be implemented." ”He says invoking NATO’s collective-defense clause would mean a “global catastrophe,” before adding: “Lithuania will disappear from the map of the world." That’s the wager underneath the threat: not that Russia could defeat NATO, but that NATO would be too frightened of defeating Russia to defend Lithuania.
It's a dangerous game they are playing!
- Mario Nawfal posts Dmitry Medvedev's September 11, 2026 statement threatening to wipe Lithuania off the map if it hosts nuclear weapons, arguing NATO would not invoke Article 5 to avoid planetary catastrophe.
- Medvedev's remarks target Lithuania's ongoing parliamentary process to repeal its constitutional ban on nuclear weapons and foreign bases, following June 2026 talks with the US on potential deployments.
- The threat highlights Russia's nuclear posturing to deter Baltic NATO states from enhancing deterrence capabilities amid the Ukraine war and regional tensions.
