The Vela incident - The double flash that still looks like a secret nuclear test
On September 22, 1979, a US Vela satellite detected a double flash over the South Atlantic, a signature normally associated with a nuclear explosion. An official panel later concluded the signal was probably not a nuclear test, suggesting another explanation such as a satellite impact event. But other evidence, including hydroacoustic analysis, intelligence suspicions, and later claims involving South Africa and Israel, kept the controversy alive.
The cause of the Vela incident remains unresolved.
