He said they “came back disguised in new forms… with the same mission: to steal intellectual property and to infiltrate the minds of American students.” His closer: “No more, and never again.”
After 2019 funding cuts dropped the institutes from ~100 to a handful, many simply rebranded. In August the Pentagon ordered 30 schools—including Harvard, MIT, Georgetown, Cornell, and Duke—to cut ties to Section 1286-listed Chinese entities and the rebranded groups or lose research funding. By mid-October all 30 had complied, producing more than 80 termination actions.
- The X post by @Unveiled_ChinaX quotes Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth announcing that the Pentagon designated rebranded Confucius Institutes as national security threats, stating 80 "propaganda cells" resurfaced at 30 US universities after earlier shutdowns.
- Hegseth detailed that these entities, backed by the Chinese government, reappeared under new names with the mission of intellectual property theft and influencing American students; the Pentagon used funding leverage to order cut ties, leading to full compliance and over 80 terminations within two months.
- The action builds on 2019 congressional restrictions that sharply reduced original Confucius Institutes, with affected schools including Harvard, MIT, Georgetown, Cornell, and Duke, amid longstanding US concerns over CCP influence in academia.
