OpenAI has shut down ChatGPT accounts linked to Russian and Iranian influence operations.

According to NBC News, the networks used artificial intelligence to spread geopolitical disinformation, impersonate journalists and support covert influence campaigns. An Iranian network reportedly published more than 100 articles across 26 media outlets using seven fabricated Western journalist identities, with no evidence that the publishers knew the identities were fake.

Meanwhile, a Russian-linked operation targeted Latin America with anti-Ukrainian narratives, fabricated government communications and a front organization posing as a research center. OpenAI also found that Russian operators used ChatGPT to produce internal reports exaggerating their campaigns’ effectiveness.

The findings illustrate how AI can help influence networks produce and distribute deceptive material while concealing who is behind it. The use of fabricated identities and seemingly legitimate organizations makes such campaigns particularly difficult for audiences to recognize.
