It's important that when you express an opinion, that you don't sit on the fence.
Sure. Last reminder than, to everyone, don't hold this place back, you can still do what's right for The DWS & it's future, and can still change your vote to yes✅. Director aloud in poll settings for people to change their vote.

Warning, very long response...

Frankly, neither option in the poll satisfies me. The most important comment I have read in this thread is Spyglass':

"DEFCON Warning System, in order to be taken as a serious player on the web for unbiased, level headed intelligence analysis, can’t have a bunch of butthurt keyboard warriors slinging arrows at each other all day. No one will take the site seriously if political biases are brought into the open. Intel analysis is just about the most Omni-partisan thing you can imagine."

I used to sit in on monthly trainings conducted by the Communications Director for the Army Chief of Staff's social media. Gen. Milley. One time she was showing some of the hot headed criticism an enlisted guy had posted. She was asked why she didn't just take the post down immediately and ban him from further posts. She answered, "Oh, no. All that does is drive criticism underground where it festers and metastacizes, leaving leadership more uninformed and isolated." She gave him a rational, factual reply, offered further resources to him and suggested if he would like to discuss further she would gladly continue the conversation with him privately. I think back to this often when people try to squash public dissent.

I don't know what the answer is here. I know that the personal animosity and lack of respect for different views has led me to visit the forum less and less often while I try to stay informed about our (US) own extremities. I don't need to come to a forum about nuclear risk for that. I can read all day on our news and social media if I wish.

How's that for a lack of a yes or no? I keep looking for a better option than eliminating the 'political' discussions, but so far I've not seen it.

Some thoughts on divisive politics and political factions.

from the Federalist papers #10

There are two methods of curing the mischiefs of faction: The one, by removing its causes; the other, by controlling its effects.

There are again two methods of removing the causes of faction: The one by destroying the liberty which is essential to its existence; the other, by giving to every citizen the same opinions, the same passions, and the same interests.

It could never be more truly said than of the first remedy, that it is worse than the disease. Liberty is to faction, what air is to fire, an aliment without which it instantly expires. But it could not be a less folly to abolish liberty, which is essential to political life, because it nourishes faction, than it would be to wish the annihilation of air, which is essential to animal life because it imparts to fire its destructive agency.

All….. the way back in 1787 just 13 years after Penning the Declaration of Independence. Just six years after the Treaty of Paris and the end to the war.
Already the same men who joined together to take on the most powerful nation on earth. To carve out some new for of government.
We’re squabbling and talking trash to each other.
Yet it was Madison’s view to counter division and factious infighting there were two options to control it.

One just take away the freedom of liberty from everyone or two make liberty so universally free to all citizens. That factions will be smothered out by all citizens expressing their opinions

But to take aways the liberty of political debate and all the ugly factious behaviors that encourage it. Would be like taking air from a fire. The fire will go out of course.
But at the cost of giving up all liberty.

But to wish this like removing air from a fire would also be wishing the annihilation of all life on earth.

Hoping for some kind of amiable centrist coalition of leaders and positions. That you can just sort of monitor from time to time to make sure there behaving.
Is virtually the same as hoping you have a good king.
It’s been said our liberties were fought for and defended by individuals in uniform.
This is absolutely true, But it is no more true that when free Americans set and talk and argue over policies, laws and separation of powers.

It’s been said liberty isn’t free, it damn well isn’t. It has to be defended with martial force. It also must be defended through rational public debate. Which is every bit as important as defending it by force.
The very nature and scope of liberty is defended nurtured and protected everyday by the former.

Now when new people come to the forums from wherever, they won't see that disease appendage to the forums know as Political Subsection.

well I guess I would say, if we go back and look at the coldwar, was it a good idea to keep an eye on the political situation on the soviets? one of the worse nightmares imaginable right now is the collapse of a nuclear power , let alone a world power. should things get spicy in the US. it might change the way China and Russia look at the US, if they felt the US would go into a civil war the entire world would be working together to ensure the our nukes did not fall into the wrong hands. I mean what did the US do when the soviet union collapse just sit back and laugh? it is a matter of survival to ensure these weapons do not fall into the wrong hands.

so, would we way internal politics do not matter? I might hate politics but there is a reason to keep an eye on things. I have watched as the heat has been turned up on some of these political threads, I wish it was not the case but it is. the left vs Right crap does play into the thinking of all the other nations and my affect nuclear doctrine.

You can absolutely argue this. However, moderators have to work their tails off to keep that section civil, and 80% of the time at least, the thread gets closed to further discussion because people can’t help themselves but to debate the person and not the position, then insults get thrown, and it becomes a mess.

Well we can, just in private, amongst “members only”

We can even wear our vintage black jackets (over terry cloth shirts)

Again. Geopolitic issue. We already have a Geopolitics subsection. Abortion, Gun Rights, ect have ZERO place here.

We need a good simple politic thread that’s about as disfunctional as my family, bouncing from topic to topic as the spirit moves. In a members only section that allows people to vent, without us (DWS) looking stupid.

It’s okay to be a rough fit, and sit around in sweats. Its okay to say what’s in your mind even if you are still wearing parachute pants. The Members section is like a family. You are home and its safe. Your opinions are always welcome and the rebuttals can be brutal (look at you Uncle Bob).

It will keep people home. If there is nothing going on they are going to go watch kitten and baby goats on facetube. Not that there is anything wrong with that….

You want to talk about those issues that don't effect most people who come here, let alone what people come here for... Bug off somewhere else more suiting like Twitter, Telegram, or Truth Social.

Sincerely, you'res truly, f*** off. Majority of people/lurkers do not come here for the 💩 that everyone could see on every other platform.

If it is political and relates to nuclear threats it already has a subsection......... it's called the ➡️geopolitical subsection.
