Taiwan Demonstrates Sea Defenses Against Potential Chinese Attack as Tensions Rise with Beijing

Taiwan on Thursday demonstrated its sea defenses against a potential Chinese attack as tensions rise with Beijing, part of a multitiered strategy to deter an invasion from the mainland.

The island’s navy highlighted its Kuang Hua VI fast attack missile boats and Tuo Chiang-class corvettes in waters near Taiwan’s largest port of Kaohsiung, a major hub for international trade considered key to resupplying Chinese forces should they establish a beachhead on the island.

China builds huge wartime military command centre in Beijing:
Complex will be bigger than Pentagon and include bombproof bunkers for leaders, say US officials.

China’s military is building a massive complex in western Beijing that US intelligence believes will serve as a wartime command centre far larger than the Pentagon, according to current and former American officials.

Satellite images obtained by the Financial Times that are being examined by US intelligence show a roughly 1,500-acre construction site 30km south-west of Beijing with deep holes that military experts assess will house large, hardened bunkers to protect Chinese military leaders during any conflict — including potentially a nuclear war.
Several current and former US officials said the intelligence community was closely monitoring the site, which would be the world’s largest military command centre — and at least 10 times the size of the Pentagon.

Based on an assessment of satellite images obtained by the FT, major construction started in mid-2024. Three people familiar with the situation said some intelligence analysts had dubbed the project “Beijing Military City”.

The construction comes as the People’s Liberation Army develops new weapons and projects ahead of the force’s centenary in 2027. US intelligence said President Xi Jinping had also ordered the PLA to have developed the capability to attack Taiwan by then.

The PLA is also rapidly expanding its nuclear weapons arsenal and working to better integrate its different branches. Military experts believe the PLA’s lack of integration is among its biggest weaknesses compared with the US armed forces.
“If confirmed, this new advanced underground command bunker for the military leadership, including President Xi as the chairman of the Central Military Commission, signals Beijing’s intent to build not only a world-class conventional force but also an advanced nuclear warfighting capability,” said Dennis Wilder, the former head of China analysis for the CIA.

Chinese media reports the PLA “dispatched multiple waves of naval + air forces to conduct combat alert patrols + training around Taiwan” since 28 Jan

- Several H-6K bombers carried out “day-and-night flight missions”
- Multiple batches of J-10C fighter aircraft conducted combat patrols
- Frigate CNS Huaibei (516) organized a “live-fire confrontation exercise”

From Chinese New Year to Lantern Festival today, “frontline forces of the PLA Eastern Theater Command maintained a state of combat readiness at all times, frequently dispatching naval and air forces to conduct combat readiness patrols and training missions.”

Over the 16-day period, Taiwan detected 90+ PLA Navy warships and 200+ PLA aircraft nearby (at least 140 entered Taiwan’s ADIZ)..

China’s war games near Taiwan could be used to conceal attack, US says:
Pentagon’s Indo-Pacific chief says American military must step up preparations for conflict in region.
China’s military exercises around Taiwan have become so extensive that they could soon be used as a “fig leaf” to conceal an attack on the island, according to the top US military commander in the Indo-Pacific.

China Fielding New Strategic Bombers:
China’s military has begun deploying significant numbers of upgraded strategic nuclear bombers that are bolstering Beijing’s triad of weapons, including land-based missiles and nuclear missile submarines, according to U.S. defense officials.
The new strategic bomber is an H-6N that was recently converted to a nuclear delivery system from less-capable bombers. The new bombers have increased the overall strategic threat posed by China’s rapidly expanding nuclear forces, said officials who provided a briefing on People’s Liberation Army air power.
“The H-6 November gives them the long lacking third leg of the nuclear triad,” one intelligence official said. “They are coming online.”

US drops wording saying it does not support Taiwan independence

The United States Department of State has dropped wording stating that Washington does not support independence for Taiwan.

The State Department website’s latest “fact sheet” about Taiwan, a self-governing island claimed by China, does not include the phrase “we do not support Taiwan independence,” which was previously featured on the page.

The fact sheet, which was updated on Thursday, also modifies a passage about Taiwan’s inclusion in international organisations, by dropping references to “where statehood is not a requirement”, and adds that Taiwan’s dispute with China should be resolved “free from coercion, in a manner acceptable to the people on both sides of the Strait”.

A sentence has also been added describing the Pentagon’s cooperation with Taiwan’s National Science and Technology Council.

Taiwan detained a Chinese-crewed ship on suspicions of undersea cable sabotage - The GuardianA communications cable was damaged on Tuesday off the coast of Taiwan. The coast guard was closely monitoring the waters around the cable, and quickly moved to intercept a vessel that was in the area at the time of the breakage. It was a cargo ship named Hong Tai, sailing under the flag of Togo, but with an all-Chinese crew.It is not yet clear whether the breakage was intentional, but the coast guard suspects a "grey zone intrusión by China."

China has really ratcheted up the bellicose rhetoric recently with warnings, threats, and ultimatums:

• “If war is what the U.S. wants, be it a tariff war, a trade war or any other type of war, we’re ready to fight till the end.”

• “We will come and get you [Taiwan], sooner or later... We make no promise to renounce the use of force.”

• “Rubio’s remarks are steeped in the Cold-War mentality and full of lies and false accusations. The Taiwan question is the most crucial, sensitive and explosive issue in the China-U.S. relations. If the U.S. does not hope to trigger confrontation, they must stop crossing or trampling on the red line.”

• “Anyone who dares to push for ‘Taiwan independence’ will certainly face swift and strong countermeasures from the PLA. And we warn some individuals of the U.S. side: playing sneaky tricks on Taiwan would only backfire.”

• “We warn the [Taiwan] DPP authorities that holding back the tide with a broom will only end up in self-destruction... In the face of the prevailing trend of China’s reunification, any petty tricks by the DPP authorities are futile. Being too cunning by half will end up costing its life. As the PLA has pointed out multiple times, seeking ‘Taiwan independence’ is a dead end. For those who are hopelessly stubborn, let them crash headlong into the harsh reality.”

• “We urge the U.S. to immediately correct its wrongdoings, abide by the one-China principle and three China-U.S. joint communiqués, handle the Taiwan question with extra prudence, stop using Taiwan to contain China, stop upgrading its substantive relations with Taiwan, stop helping Taiwan expand so-called ‘international space,’ stop emboldening and supporting ‘Taiwan independence,’ and avoid further severe damage to China-U.S. relations and peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait.”
