US–AUS deal at the White House. What it actually does
• Critical minerals: Launches an $8.5B project pipeline to de-risk rare earths & gallium from China. EXIM issued 7 LOIs worth $2.2B, enabling up to $5B. Plan includes a WA gallium refinery that will refine up to 100 tons a year.
• Defense industry/AUKUS: “Full steam ahead.” Australia funding U.S. submarine yards. $1B already, plus another $1B by year end.
• Procurements: $1.2B for unmanned undersea vehicles, $2.6B Apache tranche, and $2B for Integrated Air & Missile Defense i.e JABMS.
• Munitions supply chains: Streamlined exports under Australia’s GWEO to support 200 plus U.S. suppliers.
Why this is on my radar: Hardens allied sub/munitions timelines and cuts Beijing’s leverage over inputs that underpin missiles, radars, and shipbuilding.
