Preparing for Possible US Food Shortages Due to Fertilizer Prices

If farmers don't plant, food prices and shortages skyrocket. I recommend stocking up on canned meats, flour, and other basic staples in preparation for the possibility of food shortages. If it doesn't happen, you can still eat it.

I don't live in the USA but I believe it is essential to supplement by growing things as home. Have always done this. Short sowing of progressive vegetables plots to have multiple crops becoming ripe to pick at different and extended times. Some times I have totally avoided the need to buy vegetables at all. Simple to do but the biggest issue I have is wildlife helping itself. Ever seen Emus picking cherry tomatoes. Will destroy fences to get to them. Had to change and grown green zebra and green grape tomatoes that don't go red and act a a signal to these big birds.

Home grown veggie gardens generally take 3 months to produce crops from seed so you may aswell start making your own compost for fertiliser shortages aswell.. dinner prep scraps nothing acidic eg tomato ,citrus etc. Worm farms are a great source of nutrients , banana peel for potassium etc etc. Rake up dry leaves place in a tub with a little water and a lid to help break them down etc. Netting if necessary to protect crops . Look into copper wire and zinc coated wire and old aa batteries for in the soil . Explore everything to improve your chances.

If there is fertilizer shortages caused by a US iran war,
All the manure you ever need can be found on capital hill🤔😂😂😂😂

Actually under local law animal manures are supposed to be aged for several years especially carnivore (dog, cat) and human. I use very little animal manure but a lot of shredded and hot composted garden waste that breaks down in just a few months to a lovely black copost.

Exactly right. I have a habit of using multiple garden beds and leave some fallow. I then rip out any growth present and shred this before hot composting. It can proceed while the vegetables grow. As part of the preparation II empty the ready compost bins and work it through the soil before planting. I am lucky in that I have several large compost bins. A few 400litre aerobins that are hot composters and a 1000litre bin. When the bins are ready to empty the base I have several smaller bins that I store processed compost in.

Rabbit manure is one of the only two that doesn't need to be aged or composted. I think the other is Llama or alpaca?

Reporting locally, we are only about four weeks from planting season here in Indiana, and I have yet to see any farmers prepping their fields. Probably a little early to get concerned, but it's something I'm watching closely.

Maybe with fuel price and fertilizer, you’d have to look at the comdosity pricing. Maybe there’s a calculus there?

I don't know enough about that; I'm just looking at past history with the fields that are around our property. If I don't see the farmers out starting field prep by the end of April I will extremely concerned.

  • High Dependency: The U.S. imports 80–90% of its potash from Canada. Canada also supplies about 10% of total U.S. nitrogen needs.
  • Trade Disruptions: In early 2025, U.S. tariffs on Canadian fertilizer, including a 25% tariff on potash, caused prices to surge.
US farmers have to pay the tarrif 25%

“You can make compelling cases for us to do business with Canada and Canada to get the lowest tariffs of any trading partner in the world,” said U.S. Ambassador Pete Hoekstra.

We should always aim for free trade’

Hoekstra suggested pitching why doing business with Canada is a “phenomenal deal” for the United States.

“You will get a much different response in Washington than coming in and saying, ‘you absolutely need our stuff.’”

A compelling case could land Canada in the lowest tariff bucket, the ambassador said.

Being in the lowest bucket shouldn’t be Canada’s goal, Pawlik said.

Despite geopolitical tensions, Russian fertilizer is exempt from U.S. sanctions, making it a pivotal source, with Russia providing 51% of U.S. urea imports in Q2 2025

Wouldnt be expediant and beneficial to put pressure on Russia? Reduce Tarrif to ots neighbor Canada,

US farmers support Russia?
Who wallets are getting at what cost?

United States Imports from Russia of Fertilizers was US$1.3 Billion during 2024, according to the United Nations COMTRADE database on international trade. United States Imports from Russia of Fertilizers - data, historical chart and statistics - was last updated on March of 2026.

Why doesnt domestic reporting tell you this?

So when Russia supplies our adversarys with bullets, bombs and missles, What does your $1.3 billion buy them to shoot at your sons and daughters overseas?

👉With $1.3 billion, Russia can significantly boost its conventional arsenal, producing thousands of drones, hundreds of armored vehicles, or several specialized missiles. This budget could fund roughly 50,000 to 100,000+ Shahed-style kamikaze drones, or approximately 200–300 T-90M main battle tanks
. The funds could also cover production of hypersonic 3M22 Zircon or Kh-47M2 Kinzhal missiles, although exact costs are classified

In addition, Russia’s defense industrial base has produced significant quantities of weapons systems—such as main battle tanks, munitions, and drones—with the help of China, Iran, North Korea, and other partners to conduct a continuing war of attrition. Russia also has an advantage from its much larger pool of soldiers that can be mobilized.

I work at a grocery factory if that makes sense. Essentially we support curbside orders for 6 different grocery stores. Produce quality is not so great as of late. UPO (Units Per Order) has significantly been reduced as wallets tighten up. Usually very busy this time of year but I am noticing a noticeable drop in orders. My worry is panic buying if people catch wind there maybe shortages. I'll keep an eye on things and keep the community posted.

This is the shape of things to come, COVID, was the test to see how society could be modified(successful)

Medieval kings could control their people taxing the food they produced, and control uneducated minds with religion,

Now our Kings(leaders) control people( food, fuel oil, commerce ,medicine,) and todays religion( all the many forms of news media and social networks)

The outlook is for bleak, until ,we ,as a humanity ,can return to a world thats respects each orther, by eliminateing the treachurous and destructive bullies of the world,
