Pulsar’s Sunbird programme achieved first plasma in March 2026, demonstrating initial confinement and particle acceleration using krypton. Upcoming testing will add plasma diagnostics, superconducting magnets, RF and rotating magnetic-field heating, and thrust measurements. The programme aims to advance toward aneutronic fusion propulsion while studying neutron-induced damage to reactor walls and magnets with UKAEA.
  • The UK-based program targets aneutronic fusion propulsion for high-efficiency space tugs with specific impulse of 10,000–15,000 seconds, partnering with UKAEA to study neutron-induced damage to reactor components.
  • Upcoming tests will incorporate plasma diagnostics, superconducting magnets, RF and rotating magnetic field heating, plus thrust measurements, as shown in the post’s promotional video mixing renders and facility footage.
