Putin: We'll target USA if Washington deploys missiles in Europe

If the US choses to deploy intermediate-range missiles in Europe, it would escalate the tension to a level similar to that of the 1962 Cuban missile crisis for no reason whatsoever, Russian President Vladimir Putin argued.
Putin argued that if both parties deploy nuclear-capable missiles in Europe, it would lead to an escalation of tensions unseen since 1962, when the US threatened to attack Soviet ships rather than allow them to deliver nuclear missiles to Cuba.

"Is there some hard ideological confrontation now similar to what was during the Cold War? There is none. We surely have mutual complaints, conflicting approaches to some issues, but that is no reason to escalate things to a stand-off on the level of the Caribbean crisis of the early 1960s," Putin said, using the Russian term to describe the Kennedy-Khrushchev standoff.

NATO Deputy Spokesperson Piers Cazalet: “We have noted President Putin’s address of 20 February. Russian statements threatening to target Allies are unacceptable. We call on Russia to focus on returning to compliance with the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty"

But the comparison to the Cuban Missile Crisis? What, is Russia going to blockade Europe?

No, that would kick off WW3 immediately. But they *could* deploy IRBMs to Venezuela, thereby bringing about the same conditions as existed in 1962. Don't forget, we started that escalation by placing our Jupiter missiles in Turkey. This would be no different.

I don't think that will happen. Murdo isn't going to last, and I can't see the new government allowing that.

Does Russia still have sufficient relations with Cuba to station missiles there again?

Sure. How'd that work out last time? hahaha

Seriously, though, Russia would have a good argument for putting missiles there if the US sticks medium range missiles in Europe. But who would they be making the argument to? The world? Hardly, as the world isn't going to like that because they know what would happen next.

Anyway, missiles in Cuba are useless since they have a boatload of subs off the coast which can effectively do the same thing and are harder to destroy.

The US has a strategic reason to put missiles in Europe. The US is vulnerable due to its coasts and its insane rational for putting its command and a lot of bases there. Russia, on the other hand, has a lot of land between it and the closest US missile.

Will Russia put missiles in Cuba? Nah. They may make some noise about it, but it isn't going to happen.

I'm not too worried about his ICBM's as much as I am the SLCM's. Putin's been updating his Naval platforms for quite some time now, thus, we should focus more on the naval aspect because he's going to use his subs to get close and open fire. He has a base in Cuba, Venezuela, and a spy base in Nicaragua. We're slowly being circled.

I do not mean this as a negative your post at all but with the capabilities of just one or two SLBM haven’t we all pretty much been encircled for a long time.
Have the base expansions around the Caribbean enhanced Russia’s capabilities in real terms or just been good news propaganda. It’s a honest question and I might just be missing significance of Putin’s “upgrades” to Western Hemisphere bases been. I haven’t followed them much.
I’m mixed on his new missle tech capabilities as well. Several of them seem to be more like a Popular Science “what the future holds” prototype roll outs rather than introduction of new fully function systems. I could be incorrect, thoughts.
It’s like a article I read about China’s fifth gen fighters. They do have some good tech and use of solid technology. But their still using soviet era engines that have half the range and capability of a F-22.
Stealth is severely restricted if it’s being limited in range and duration.
