This is the kind of solid media reporting I am known for, apparently <sobs to self>

It’s happening. Everyone on both sides have picked their teams, gird loins and suited up with Kaftans and underarmor.

Oh my, so much action packed with jam. 🍿

Military transport aircraft with the U.S. Air Force’s Air Mobility Command (AMC), most originally coming from Osan Air Base in South Korea, are continuing to arrive today in the Middle East, this includes a C-5M “Super Galaxy” currently crossing Turkey. Over two dozens flights originating from Osan have arrived at Isa Air Base in Bahrain, as well as other U.S. and allied air bases in the region over the last week, believed to likely be carrying air-defense systems, such as the U.S. Army’s MIM-104 “Patriot” surface-to-air missile system and/or the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) anti-ballistic missile defense system.

According to a senior Iranian official who spoke recently with The Telegraph, top military commanders in Iran’s Armed Forces and the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) are being urged to prepare a “preemptive strike” using long-range ballistic missiles against the U.S-U.K. joint base at Diego Garcia in the Indian Ocean, in an attempt to deter U.S. President Donald J. Trump from ordering major strikes against Iran.

This would quite possibly be the dumbest thing I have ever seen a nation do

Is this an Onion source? OMG that will be stupid. First they can’t hit Israel which is next house down. Diego? Really?

Btw. I am certain, absolutely certain they will try. But a first strike? I assumed they would wait until we were pounding the snot out of them so it stayed as a “fair shot” and “no harm no foul” type of move.

I’d really like a glimpse into their thought process. If they think this would do anything but push the US to strike bigger and harder than they must be absolutely insane.

Diego is out of range of *KNOWN* Iranian weapons. Again, we still don’t know what Russia hand-delivered in those cargo flights some time ago….

If they have long range missiles that can exceed 3,000 miles of range then it’s not a bluff. Iran doesn’t have those weapon systems publicly. The longest range platform they have is 2,000km and maybe some change.

Diego is wayyy outside that range. *unless* Iran has a submarine based missile platform that can get close enough to be within firing range. Russia has really helped them out recently… See this except from this article -

“Iran is actively expanding and modernizing its submarine fleet. Originally, none of Iran’s submarines were capable of firing ballistic or cruise missiles. Starting in the 1990s, Iran launched a program to acquire or domestically produce mines and torpedoes for all its subsurface boats.11In 2005 it reportedly launched two local production lines of 533mm and 324mm wake-homing torpedoes with ranges of up to 20km.12 Iran has since developed ballistic and cruise missile technology for its submarines. On 24 February 2019, Iran successfully test-fired a cruise missile from one of its Ghadir-class vessels. The Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA) claims the Tareq and the Fateh submarines have the same capability“

Russia doesn't officially have any IRBMs deployed (Oreshnik can't really be regarded as an operational system at present). It's highly unlikely they would supply any such to Iran, and there's less-than-zero chance that they would supply Iran with ICBMs. The distance from Iran to Diego Garcia is also too great to enable a strike by cruise missiles.

The Kheibar has a claimed range of ~2000 km, but lying about ranges is commonplace, and it's suspected that the missile could reach farther (possibly up to 4000 km) if armed with a lighter warhead. Still somewhat short of goal.

Pretty much the only realistic option for striking Diego Garcia would be a submarine-launched cruise missile. Iran has that capability - though OTOH the US has the capability to intercept SLCMs.

That said, Iran has a wealth of options for retaliating against other US and Israeli assets in the Middle East.

That’s exactly what I was thinking. Issue is, they will probably be detected before they could get in range. Those Iranian subs aren’t quiet like an Ohio-class…
