B-2 Spirits Amassed On Diego Garcia Underscore Hardened Aircraft Shelter Debate

The remoteness of key forward operating locations no longer offers the level of protection, even against Iranian capabilities, it once did.

🛑 BREAKING: Pentagon orders the deployment of additional squadrons and other air assets to the Middle East, extends the deployment of Harry S. Truman Carrier Strike Group, and orders Carl Vinson Carrier Strike Group to the region
“The United States and its partners remain committed to regional security in the CENTCOM AOR and are prepared to respond to any state or non-state actor seeking to broaden or escalate conflict in the region,” Pentagon Spox Sean Parnell says.

In addition to the 6 B-2 “Spirit” Long-Range Strategic Stealth Bombers that arrived last week at Naval Support Facility Diego Garcia in the Indian Ocean. One of the B-2s deployed from Whiteman Air Force Base in Missouri, remains at Daniel K. Inouye International Airport in Honolulu, Hawaii, after suffering an “in-flight emergency” while crossing the Pacific on March 24th.

Here's something interesting I noticed going through some OSINT sources:

Go onto FlightRadar24. Check what you see for the "most tracked flights". I'm getting a bunch of ground vehicles.

Now punch in a common prefix for USAF C-17's, "RCH" (short for REACH) and I have 17 up flying at the time of this post. With the buildup that is going on, why are these not on the most tracked?

NBC News is reporting that the Pentagon has ordered the relocation of at least 2 U.S. Army MIM-104 “Patriot” surface-to-air missile batteries and a Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) anti-ballistic missile defense system from Asia to the Middle East in the past few days, as tensions between Iran and the United States continue to grow and future military action against Iran seems more and more likely.

Reports of these relocations appear in line with a massive number of tracked military cargo flights to the Middle East over the last week by the U.S. Air Force’s Air Mobility Command (AMC), with dozens of C-17s and several C-5s arriving at Isa Air Base in Bahrain as well as other bases near the Persian Gulf, almost all of which originated from Osan Air Base in South Korea; with planes continuing to arrive today at Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar and Djibouti International Airport near Yemen.

The relocation of critical air-defenses such as THAAD and the repositioning of the USS Carl Vinson (CVN-70) and her Carrier Strike Group to the Middle East, as well as the deployment of at least 6 B-2 “Spirit” Long-Range Strategic Stealth Bombers recently to Diego Garcia in the Indian Ocean, suggest that the United States may be preparing for a major conflict soon with Iran.

CNN notes the six B-2s currently at DG probably represent the entirety of the deployable fleet of the aircraft.

"I assume there are one or two at home for training and another few standing nuclear alert. Rest in maintenance." - Peter Layton, former RAAF pilot and now visiting fellow at the Griffith Asia Institute.

Only 21 B-2 airframes have ever been built.

A change in position in regards to Iran? Trump is in favor of DIRECT talk with Iran. Trump on Air Force One: "Forget about the letters. They wanted to use a mediator. I don't think that's necessarily true anymore. I think they're worried. I think they feel vulnerable, and I don't want them to feel that way."

This (imo) means nothing/stalling and his comment at the end I am assuming Iran is going to take the wrong way. It's settled already, Iran will never give up its nuke program or ambitions for them. Trump is never going to let Iran get them. So not sure what the parade is, must still be getting our ducks in a row.
