Russian Tensions | Azerbaijan - Armenia

Iran’s President Masoud Pezeshkian will travel to Armenia on August 18 for a four-day visit, Armenian media reported Tuesday, citing the country’s economy ministry, amid Tehran’s concerns over Yerevan’s consent to US development of the Zangezur Corridor in northern Iran.

The US proposal to develop the Zangezur Corridor may further reduce Iran's already-diminished ability to project power in the region.

The Zangezur Corridor is a Turkish-Azerbaijani-proposed transit route that would connect Azerbaijan to its exclave, Nakhchivan.

The corridor would sever Iranian land access to Russia and Europe via Armenia, which could exclude Iran from a new international transit route and hinder Iranian efforts to become a major transit hub.

The corridor would enable Azerbaijan to circumvent Iran to access the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic, which will likely deprive Iran of political leverage and any associated revenue along the corridor.

Iranian officials have expressed concern about growing Turkish influence in the region, and have recently found themselves at odds with Azerbaijan, which has strengthened ties with Israel in recent months.

Opens Turkey and consequently Europe to Central Asia while bypassing Russian and Iran transit corridors. The initiative was encouraged by Turkey and might help normalize relations between Armenia and Turkey end for now a centuries old conflict.
A just maybe might bring Turkey back into the European orbit.
Economic gains tend to encourage peers working in conjunction.
Who knows what kind of impact it might have on the flow southern central Asian oil and alliances.
All while increasing American influence into a strategic part of the world.

Call it America’s version of belt and road.

Published videos show a massive fire in Tabriz on Wednesday, August 19. According to media reports, the cause of the fire, which occurred near Tabriz Airport, was a fire in a waste warehouse.
Video:

A fire broke out at a facility near Tabriz airport. Tabriz is located in East Azerbaijan Province. According to Iranian claims, the site is a waste facility. However, it is not unlikely that it is actually a fertilizer plant located in the nearby industrial zone. A fertilizer plant produces a wide range of fertilizers and chemicals, such as ammonium nitrate, which can support the production of explosives for the missile industry. Tabriz, as a central city in East Azerbaijan Province, is also a strategic site, and there have been reports of Israeli strikes in this area during Operation "Like a Lion" in 2025, including attacks on Tabriz airport.

Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan's plane flew over Azerbaijan for the first time since peace was established, Pashinyan's spokeswoman said.

Azerbaijan’s Ministry of Defence reported that participating countries in EFES-2026 conducted a coastal assault from the sea in Türkiye. The scenario involved high speed boat movement, landing under fire support, obstacle clearing, neutralizing defensive positions, and securing coastline for amphibious landing.

Was Turkmenistan not invited to the party?
My feel on it...

I remember reporting this last year and had same thoughts. Turkmenistan was not at that particular naval/security “party,” but I would be careful saying it was not invited.

It says in a source listed below "the commanders emphasized that the Caspian belongs to the five littoral nations". Meaning the broader legal/political framework still recognizes all five coastal states i.e Iran, Russia, Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan, AND Turkmenistan.

A later Jamestown Foundation piece makes the missing chair issue clearer, stating that “Turkmenistan notably did not send a delegation.”

So the safest answer is Turkmenistan was absent and CHOOSE not to sign/participate in this specific agreement. NOT that they where excluded. Why... Who knows...

In other words empty chair, yes. Confirmed snub, not proven.
